The AI landscape can feel overwhelming — hundreds of tools launch every month. But almost all of them fall into a handful of categories. Once you know the categories, choosing the right tool for a task becomes simple.
The main categories of AI tools
Think of AI tools by what kind of thing they produce or work with. Here are the categories you will meet most often.
- Text AI — writes, summarises, translates, answers and explains (chat assistants like ChatGPT).
- Image AI — creates or edits pictures from text descriptions (image generators).
- Audio AI — turns speech to text, text to speech, or generates music and voices.
- Video AI — generates or edits video, adds captions, or creates avatars.
- Coding AI — writes, explains and fixes code (developer assistants).
- Data AI — analyses spreadsheets, finds patterns and answers questions about data.
- Productivity AI — built into email, docs, slides and note tools to draft and summarise.
Free vs paid tools
Most categories have capable free tiers that are perfect for learning and everyday use. Paid plans typically add higher limits, faster responses, the newest models and extra features. As a beginner, start free: you can do almost everything in this course without paying, and you will know exactly what to look for if you later decide a paid plan is worth it.
How to choose the right tool
The trick is to start from the task, not the tool. Ask: what kind of output do I need? That points you straight to a category. Then within that category, pick a well-known tool with a free tier and good reviews. Do not collect dozens of tools — two or three you know well beat twenty you barely use.
| Your task | Tool type to reach for |
|---|---|
| Write or rewrite an email | Text AI |
| Summarise a long article | Text AI |
| Create a picture for a post | Image AI |
| Turn a recording into notes | Audio AI (speech-to-text) |
| Add captions to a clip | Video AI |
| Explain or fix a code error | Coding AI |
| Find trends in a spreadsheet | Data AI |
| Draft slides from notes | Productivity AI |
A note before you dive in
Many tools now combine categories — a single assistant might handle text, images and data together. The categories still help you think clearly about what you are asking for. In the next lesson we focus on the most useful category for beginners by far: text AI, and specifically chat assistants like ChatGPT.
Write down three real tasks you did this week that involved a computer. For each, decide which AI tool category could help. Keep this list — you will use it again when we build your AI workflow at the end of the course.
1. You want to turn a long report into a short summary. Which tool type?
2. What is the best starting point when choosing an AI tool?
3. Which is good advice for beginners?
4. You need a picture generated from a description. Which category?
- Most AI tools fit a few categories: text, image, audio, video, coding, data, productivity.
- Start free — capable free tiers cover almost everything in this course.
- Choose by task: decide the output you need, then pick the category.
- A few tools used well beat many used rarely.
