How to Use ChatGPT and Similar AI Tools

Conversations, context and corrections — how to actually work with a chat AI, plus five ready-to-use prompts.

Chat assistants are the single most useful AI tool for beginners — they handle writing, explaining, planning, summarising and brainstorming in one place. Most people only scratch the surface. A few simple habits turn a chat AI from a novelty into a genuine daily helper.

How the conversation interface works

A chat AI works as a back-and-forth conversation. You type a message, it responds, and you continue. Unlike a search engine, you are not entering keywords — you are talking. You can write full sentences, give background, ask follow-up questions and refine the result without starting over. The conversation is the feature.

You: explain JSON simply AI: a way to store structured data...(uses earlier context) You: shorter, for a child AI: it's like labelled boxes...refines using the thread
A chat AI keeps the whole conversation in view, so each reply builds on what came before.

What "context" means and why it matters

Context is everything the AI can currently see — your earlier messages in the conversation plus your latest one. It uses all of it to shape the next reply. That is why giving background helps so much: "Rewrite this for a non-technical client" produces a very different answer than "Rewrite this." The more relevant context you provide, the better the result. But context has limits — in very long conversations the earliest details may fade, so restate key facts when needed.

ContextThe information the AI can see right now — your current message plus the recent conversation — which it uses to produce its next response.

Continuing and correcting a conversation

You rarely get the perfect answer first time, and that is fine. Treat it as a dialogue. If the tone is wrong, say so. If it missed a point, add it. If the answer is too long, ask for a shorter version. Each correction sharpens the result because the AI keeps the whole thread in context.

  1. 1
    Ask

Give a clear request with any useful background.

  2. 2
    Review

Read the answer critically — is the tone, length and accuracy right?

  3. 3
    Refine

Tell it what to change: shorter, simpler, more formal, add an example.

  4. 4
    Verify

Check any facts, names or numbers before you use the result.

What never to enterNever paste passwords, full card numbers, client secrets, medical records or anything confidential into an AI tool. Treat the chat like a public space unless your organisation has a private, approved version.

Five prompts to try right now

These work in almost any chat AI. Copy one, paste it, and adapt the parts in brackets.

Learn anything
Explain [topic] to me like I am a complete beginner. Use a simple analogy and keep it under 150 words.
Summarise fast
Summarise the text below into 5 clear bullet points a busy person could read in 20 seconds:

[paste text]
Improve an email
Rewrite this email to sound polite, clear and professional. Keep it under 120 words:

[paste email]
Quiz yourself
Act as a friendly tutor. Ask me 5 questions one at a time to test my understanding of [topic], and tell me if each answer is right.
Brainstorm
Give me 10 specific, creative ideas for [goal]. For each, add one sentence on why it could work.
Try it yourself: have a real conversation

Pick one of the five prompts above, fill in the brackets with something real from your own life, and run it. Then send one follow-up message to refine the answer — shorter, simpler or with an example. Notice how the second reply improves.

Quick quiz

1. How is a chat AI different from a search engine?

2. What does "context" mean here?

3. The answer is too long. What should you do?

4. Which should you NEVER paste into a public AI tool?

5. What is the best mindset for a first answer?

Key takeaways
  • A chat AI is a conversation, not a keyword search — give background and follow up.
  • Context (the recent thread) shapes every answer; restate key facts in long chats.
  • Refine through dialogue: shorter, simpler, more formal, add an example.
  • Never paste confidential information into a public AI tool.
